A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 people got wounded in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the residence in the vicinity of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the site and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the explosion was located soon after. Each of them have been transported to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been assigned to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the Interior Minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had taken place on a level above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors stated to local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
